Two feather tattoos on forearms

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman rests her clasped hands under her chin, with her forearms on a dark table, and her face is cropped out of frame. Two feather tattoos sit on the inner forearms, one on each arm, with fine detail and soft grey shading along the barbs. The image is in soft natural light against a pale background, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, the urn's only just boiled and I'm not telling this twice. You all remember Dilys Crane, who sat by the radiator in Form Four and never said a word unless it was true. Well, the summer after we left, Dilys walked out past the gasworks with two peacock feathers tucked in her sleeves, because her uncle kept birds on the marsh and had told her any feather with an eye in it was a bit of luck you could keep.

She gave one to the lad who fixed the bus timetable, and she kept the other. The story goes that the eyes on them never closed. Every night she laid them on the windowsill facing the sea, so the eyes could watch for the boats that hadn't come home yet. Her mother thought it morbid. Dilys thought it was simply sensible.

Now, the fishermen of Porth Wen were stubborn, and a feather with an eye in it is no use to a man who won't look up. So in the autumn of that year the boats went out in a fog thick enough to lean on, and Dilys went down to the harbour wall with the feather in her fist and counted them in, one name at a time, until the last engine coughed and came home.

The second feather she gave to the sea, and the sea, being a tidy sort, handed a few of them back to the tideline for years after. Don't look at me like that. Pass the biscuits.
