The canvas came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and Mr Harrow stood in the mud with his hat in his hands and said let it be, as if he were talking about the weather. Four of us folded the big top where there had been forty. The swallows that nested in the centre pole all summer went up in a panic and wheeled over the car park like someone had shaken them out of a sack.

I kept one eye on them while we loaded the wagons. The grey mare has gone to a farm near Ludlow, and the lion cub went to a zoo in Chester that has a better roof. Mr Harrow counts the takings in the cab every night now with the door shut. I have stopped asking him what the figures say, because he has stopped pretending they are figures at all.

I am taking the train to Bristol on Friday with the trunk and the blue spangled dress. There is a dance hall there where a man called Ogilvie says they want a bareback rider who can also sing. I can do neither well, but I can do both badly and loudly, which is more than most of them manage on a Saturday.

Do not come to meet me. Let it be a surprise, or let it be nothing at all. I will write when I have a room with a window that does not face a fence. When this reaches you, look at the wires by the station. I have seen the same three birds following the train since Crewe, and I have decided they are going the same way I am.
