Fine line black script reading if you're a bird, I'm a bird, with three flying bird silhouettes on the inner wrist.

Script quote and three birds on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows the handwritten script words "if you're a bird, I'm a bird" above three solid black bird silhouettes in flight. The script is thin and delicate, while the birds are filled in with dense black ink. The design is in black ink only, shown in a close, softly lit photograph with the hand at the lower right.

The river had become a border the spring the bridge was blown, and after that the only ones who crossed it freely were the herons. Old Dorota sat on the wall above the north bank every morning with a folded square of paper in her apron pocket, and every morning the same three starlings landed on the stones beside her, as if they had been sent to keep her company.

Her son had gone to the far bank to work the orchards before the soldiers came, and he had left her with a rule from their childhood. When one of them could not come, the other would say the words and the other would answer. If you're a bird, I'm a bird. She had said them to the sky for two years. She had never thought the sky would answer.

On the third morning the guard at the footbridge, a boy with a sunburnt neck, watched her talking to the birds and shouted across that she was wasting her breath. She shrugged and went on. One starling hopped closer, and she tied the folded paper to its leg with a strand of red wool, the way her mother had knotted thread on the loom. The bird lifted off the stones, the other two rose after it, and the three of them went over the water low and sure, carrying nobody's papers and nobody's rifles.

The guard watched them until they were specks above the orchards. Then he took off his cap and looked at the empty stones for a long time. When the starlings came back that evening with a reply knotted in green thread, he let them land on the wall beside her and said nothing at all.
