By the third week of August the starlings had taken over the honeysuckle on the back wall of Seaview, and Mrs Pennock had given up pretending they were a nuisance. There were three of them, always the same three as far as I could tell, perched along the thin stem like guests who had been told dinner was at seven and were not going anywhere until it was served.

I had come to fix the guttering in June and stayed on because the rent could be paid in pastry if you were quick about it. Each morning I watched them from the kitchen step with my tea going cold. The middle bird always leaned in towards the one nearest the house, and the far one always looked out past the sea wall as if it had a train to catch.
On the last Sunday of the month a letter came for Mrs Pennock in a hand I did not recognise, and she read it twice at the table and then folded it into her apron pocket. She said nothing about it. That afternoon she cut the honeysuckle back hard, and the birds lifted off the wall one after another and did not return.
I found a curl of the cut stem lying on the path, a little spiral with its end turned up like the tip of a question. I pressed it into my notebook between the tide tables and the boarding house accounts. Mrs Pennock kept the back bedroom made up all winter anyway.
