Tribal feather on upper chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tattoo shows a stylised feather with a long curling quill, a tribal-style band across its middle and a swirl at the base. The bold, filled linework sits on smooth, lightly freckled skin with the tattoo centred in the frame. Only black ink is visible, and dark hair is partly seen at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling on the pass for three days when the innkeeper's wife found the feather on the step. It was black and long, with a curl at the tip like a fern just uncoiling, and it lay across the threshold as if someone had set it there on purpose. Her husband wanted to sweep it away. She picked it up instead and hung it on the nail above the hearth, where the wet cloaks dried.

That night the travellers gathered at the fire: a cattle drover, two monks who did not talk, and a girl called Ysolde who had come up from the valley looking for her brother. Nobody had brought a quill, so when the drover needed to write a debt in the ledger, the innkeeper's wife took the feather down and trimmed its end with her knife. The ink flowed better than any goose quill she had known. The debt was written, then another, and then Ysolde wrote her brother's name, and the ink would not dry on the page until she had finished the last letter.

Morning came with the thaw in the road. The brother, it turned out, had already gone down to the valley by the lower path. Ysolde laughed at herself and paid her shot. When the innkeeper's wife went to hang the feather back on its nail, the swirl at its base had coiled tighter, as if it had been keeping a count of every word written with it.
