Three birds on a wire across the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three solid black bird silhouettes perched on a single thin wire that stretches horizontally across the upper back. The largest bird sits at the left, with two smaller birds to its right, and the wire ends in small curled tips at each side. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the composition is centred on the back with freckled skin and a green top around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire had been up eleven days before the first bird came to it, and I had begun to think I had strung it for nobody. It ran from the broken gatehouse of Ravensmoor Castle across the wet grass to the stump of the chapel wall, a length of grey copper my uncle had bought off a salvage yard in Carlisle. He said a line in an empty place always catches something, and I was starting to believe him only because I had nothing else to show for a fortnight's work.

A blackbird came first, heavy in the shoulder and bold, and it sat at the gatehouse end as if it had paid the rent. Two days later two young sparrows landed beside it, bickering, and shuffled along until they were pressed against its flank. I stopped work on the roof to watch them. My uncle called me a daft lass for talking to birds, but I told him the castle had waited eight hundred years for somebody to notice it, and I was not about to let it wait any longer.

In the spring the blackbird stopped coming. I climbed the scaffold on the third morning and found the wire sagging and a few dark feathers caught in the mortar, and nothing more. The two sparrows stayed on regardless, one close behind the other, both facing the chapel as though the bird they followed were still somewhere ahead.

I left the wire up. Each evening I walk its length with a cup of tea going cold in my hand and count the perches. There are still three, always three, though only two of them ever stay put. I have stopped asking which one is missing.
