Three flying birds on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three small black bird silhouettes in flight sit in a loose row across the inner wrist. The shapes are solid fill with no internal linework or shading, and the birds vary slightly in angle and size. The ink is black on pale skin, set against a plain forearm, with a grey sleeve and a cream chair visible in the background.

Brother, the ferryman's boy has come back from Glevum with word that the new procurator wants every wool sack counted twice, so I have counted them twice and they are short by four. Do not tell Cunoval I said so. He has enough to chew on with the dyke at Wendle giving way every spring.

I meant to write about the birds. Three rooks came off the reed beds at dawn, flying low and straggling, one behind the other like men who have lost their place in a march. Mother would have called it a bad sign. I stood in the wet with the spade still in my hand and watched them go over the sea wall until they were only three marks on the grey. Then one turned back, and the other two followed it, and they wheeled above the hut as if they had forgotten where they meant to be.

I have thought about that all day. Maybe they were only hungry. Maybe the middle one was tired and the others would not leave it. I told the smith's wife, who laughed and said rooks have no more sense than tax men, and she may be right, but I still went out at dusk to see whether they had come back to roost. They had. Three black shapes on the thatch of the byre, hunched and quiet.

So I am sending the eleven sesterces Cunoval owes you for your share of the dyke work, and I am asking you to come before midsummer. The birds have settled. I would like to see you settle too. Write back with the day you will set out, and tell me whether the road is passable past the river.
