Infinity symbol with love and butterflies

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a continuous infinity loop with the word love written in cursive script along its lower left curve, and three small solid black butterflies trailing from its upper right end. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering and loop drawn in a delicate fine line style and the butterflies filled in solid black. The design is in black ink only, shown in a close, slightly angled photograph against plain pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lorry had been waiting since dawn in the lane marked for coaches, and by eleven the driver's patience had gone as thin as the carbon paper on my desk. I had three forms to check, a stamp that kept jamming, and a tin on the counter that nobody wanted to open.

Mr Ilić, a retired postman with a moustache like a broom, had declared it honestly. Inside, on a bed of cotton wool, lay three butterflies he had caught and pressed in summer, for his granddaughter in the town across the river. 'Live ones would be easier,' he said. 'She does not like the dead ones, so I told her they are sleeping.'

I should have sent him to the secondary bay. Instead I wrote the declaration myself, tracing the route through the boxes the way my supervisor taught us, a figure of eight that keeps the queue moving both ways. Around that loop the lanes meet, part and meet again, and every crossing ends up near where it began, only lighter by one line of paper.

When I stamped his sheet the ink came out clean, a small loop with ADMITTED curled inside it like a ribbon. He tucked the tin under his arm and walked out into the grey light. Later, when I closed the window, I found a single fleck of blue dust on the glass in the shape of a wing, and I left it there.
