Three black and grey roses on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three roses are stacked diagonally up the forearm, with their petals shaded in soft grey gradients and fine dark outlines. Dark leaves with hatched veining fill the gaps between the blooms and extend towards the wrist. The image is a close, angled shot against a dark fabric background, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

The grey rose came to Halden's nursery in the autumn of 1887, packed in wet moss with a note that said only *for the wall, not the bed*. Mr Cotterill, who had kept the glasshouses at Pennick Hall for thirty years, read it twice and slid the crate under the potting bench where the frost could not reach it.

Nobody could say what colour it would open. The Dutch labels were smudged and the cuttings showed no red in the bark. Through the winter Halden's daughter Ada sat with a lamp and sketched each bud as it swelled: a fold of grey, a second fold tucked inside the first, a leaf with veins drawn fine as hair. She filled three notebooks before the first bloom split, and it was neither red nor white but the colour of rain on slate.
The three bushes she grafted onto the south wall stood one above another like a ladder of cups, each lower one leaning under the one above. By June the carters were calling it the Widow's Climb, though no widow had ever been near the place. On the longest day Ada cut the top bloom and carried it to the kitchen table, where her father turned it in the lamplight and found, pressed beneath the outermost petal, a slip of paper in a hand he did not know.
It read: *Plant the next one where the light gives out first.* She did, and the following spring the wall was thick with grey, and the bees that came to it never went back to the red border.
