Sit closer to the grate, the lot of you, because the road is gone under the snow and stories are all this inn has left to offer. Mrs Crewe, mind the boy, he's been poking that fire since supper. Old Tobias Lark kept those roses for forty winters. Each March he grafted them from the same black-stemmed cutting, and each year one came early, one came late, and one sulked through the midsummer rain like a child refusing its supper. The first opened fat and easy to the sun, its outer petals folded back like a sleeve pushed up at the wrist. The second stayed a tight green fist for weeks and then unfurled all at once. The third never quite finished, its heart still shut when the leaves began to yellow.

One October Lady Ysolde Marr came down the frost path in her husband's coat and demanded all three for her wedding, every bloom at once, because she had been promised a garden that did as it was told. Tobias said the roses would open when they were ready and not a day before. She laughed at him, and then she wept, because the groom had written from London that he would not be coming back.

In April she returned alone, and Tobias handed her the third bud wrapped in wet moss. She carried it to the wall and watched it for a month. It opened on the morning she left for Carlisle, and she stood in the lane with her face turned up to it, glad at last that somebody had made her wait.
