Black and grey roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Three large roses with shaded petals and leaves are tattooed on the thigh, with one rose partly visible at the top and a smaller bud on the left. The work uses smooth grey shading, soft highlights and deep blacks to give the petals volume. The image is a close, angled photograph of the thigh, with a hand and ring visible at the top right and a partial tattoo at the lower left edge.

The customs officer at Hollin Bridge turned the cuttings over with the end of his pencil and asked what colour they would be when they flowered. Marta told him grey. He laughed, then looked at her face and stopped.

They were three old bushes dug from the churchyard wall on the near side of the river, wrapped in wet sacking and smelling of loam and cold iron. Her grandmother had kept them for forty years, shading each petal with a stub of charcoal on the backs of rent books, because the roses in that valley had never once come out red. Marta also carried the bud of a fourth rose in a twist of paper, closed tight as a fist.
He ran his thumb along a leaf, dark and glossy as a beetle's back, and said the regulation was plain. Anything growing must be declared. She nodded and declared the lot: the three bushes, the leaves, the bud. He wrote them down in a column, then tore the sheet in half and waved the sacking through.
In April, on the far side of the bridge, the bud opened in a window box above a bakery. The petals came out pale at the edges and deep grey at the heart, lit from underneath like a lamp behind paper, and Marta sat with her hands in her lap and watched the light move across them until the bread had cooled.
