Three cartoon characters tattoo flash sheet

Colour · Flash

Three cartoon characters are drawn as separate tattoo-style designs on a sketchbook page. The first wears a pink bunny-eared hood and sits within a banner reading SEE YOU IN HELL and purple and pink flowers, the second has a bob haircut and round glasses above the word AAAAAAH, and the third has dark hair and a yellow top beside the phrase THIS IS ME NOW and a cluster of flowers. Black outlines are filled with pencil colour in pink, purple, yellow and blue.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mum, I am writing this on an upturned flour sack at ten to four because the ovens take forty minutes to come up and Pat has already started swearing at the proving drawer. The bunny hood is still hanging on the hook by the back door, so nobody has stopped me wearing it on early shifts, and I have decided that counts as a promotion.

The cake order came in on the wrong slip. Mrs Okafor wanted a three-tier sponge for her husband's retirement with purple and pink piped flowers round the edge and a ribbon banner across the front. Instead, Pat's handwriting has put SEE YOU IN HELL in fat blue icing, and the sheet of rough designs he doodled last week has been stuck to the fridge door ever since. Pat says it is a classic. Dev says it is a cry for help. I say it is what she asked for, because she rang back twice to check and laughed both times.

At six, when the sheeter jammed and the whole kitchen went quiet, Pat let out a scream so loud the neighbour's cat came through the vent. We all stood there with our hands in the flour, and then Dev pointed at the lump of dough in Pat's apron and said, very seriously, THIS IS ME NOW, and we were all laughing too hard to get the sheeter going again.

The sun is coming up over the car park now, a sore orange through the shutters. I have put the wrong cake in the window so people can see it on the way to work. Love you, and tell Gran the scones were fine, even if they weren't.
