Kawaii sweets flash sheet in marker

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of many small designs drawn on white paper, including cupcakes, an ice cream cone with a smiling face, wrapped candies, a lipstick, a waffle and two cat faces. Bold black outlines are filled with bright pink, blue, green and yellow marker, with a scatter of sparkle and sprinkle marks across the background. The designs are arranged loosely around the sheet, with a leopard print heart in the upper right and a pink lace-edged heart at the bottom.

The sweet shop on Harrowgate Lane had never once closed before midnight, and Mabel Quint had long ago stopped asking why. Her grandmother's rule was simple: sell what the sheet asks for, and never, ever sell the last pink candy. So when the ice cream cone with the smiling face came tapping at the back door at quarter to twelve, sticky with raspberry syrup and sprinkles spilling from its ears, Mabel only sighed and reached for the scoop.

"You've been nibbled," she said, noticing the bite out of its waffle cone. "Who did that?"

The cone giggled, a sound like a spoon tapping a glass, and pointed a wafer finger at the leopard print heart propped against the window. It had been sulking there all evening, since the cat faces had decided it was too grown up for the shelf. Mabel crouched beside it. "Oh, don't be like that. You're the fanciest thing on the sheet."

The heart blushed a deeper gold. Behind the counter, a lipstick rolled out of its drawer, pulled its pink bow tight, and announced that it would be going to a party on the far side of the bakery roof. The cupcakes wanted a lift. The wrapped candies wanted to be unwrapped, twice. By the time the clock struck one, the whole shop was glittering with sparkle marks, and Mabel had a queue of sweets outside the door.

She let them all go, one by one, then locked the till and sat on the step with the cone licking her wrist. Tomorrow she would count the sprinkles and find them short, as always. Tonight, she thought, the last pink candy could stay right where it was.
