Dear Tamsin, your orange visor is still in the top drawer of the workshop, wedged between the bent torque key and a ration tin neither of us ever opened. I took the canopy off the Kestrel-Nine this morning because the hull seal has gone again, and when I ran my thumb along the red and white plating I thought of the night you painted that stripe with a brush borrowed from the galley, swearing the whole time that the paint would never dry straight.

The station at Harrow Moon has stopped answering. The last transmission was a burst of static and a single number, the one you always said was your lucky count of seconds before a jump. Mara says the convoy will wait another cycle, but she has already moved your locker into the stores, which I think she did to be kind and which I cannot forgive her for.

Then this evening the beacon on the Kestrel-Nine woke up by itself. Its trail was still streaming behind the hull, a long smear of light the colour of a bruise going yellow, and the logbook had your coordinates stamped at the bottom in a hand that was not yours, shaky and slow. I have decided not to tell anyone that part yet.

I have set the visor on the bench under the lamp so the glass catches the light. It throws a small orange square across the workshop floor, and every few minutes I walk over to check whether it has moved.
