Joker with playing card on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of the Joker shows green hair, pale blue skin and a wide toothy grin, holding a playing card with a jester on it while raising one hand. Bold dark outlines and comic-style HA! lettering frame the figure, with shading in purple, green and yellow across the coat and background. The design fills most of the frame on a lower leg, photographed indoors with a chair and wooden floor behind.

The jester card had been palmed for forty minutes before anyone noticed the deck was short, and by then Ansel Prowse was halfway down the aft stairwell of the Calder Star, humming. Somewhere above him the lounge was still full of retired dockers grumbling over their pints, each of them certain they had lost to a man who could not possibly have been that lucky. Ansel had not been lucky. He had been patient, and he had a grin he could hold for hours without it cracking.

He found Mrs Okafor waiting at the foot of the stairs with her arms folded and a clipboard pressed to her chest like a shield. The ferry rolled a little as it crossed the North Sea, and the brass rails hummed under his hand. She had the look of a woman who had seen every trick in the book and had filed each one under nuisance. "Mr Prowse," she said. "Those gentlemen would like their money back."

"Would they?" He slid the jester from his sleeve and held it up, the little harlequin face grinning back at her with its cap of bells. "Then tell them the joke's on me, and I'm paying." He laughed, loud and bright, the way he laughed when the table turned on him, and pressed the card into her hand.

She looked at it for a long moment. Then she turned it over, and on the back, in the same spidery biro he used to sign his winnings, someone had written: Nice try, Ansel. The steward had swapped the decks at Hull. Ansel felt the cold come up through the floor. Outside the porthole the black water was lit with a single white crest, and before he could think better of it he was leaning over the rail with the jester card between his fingers, letting the wind take it.
