Three chrysanthemums on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo of three chrysanthemum-style flowers on a thin stem, with a single pointed leaf below, sits on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The linework is delicate and fairly open, with light grey shading on the petals and leaves. The photograph is taken from behind against a pale curtain, with the subject's short dark hair and a thin necklace visible.

Dear Nell,

The chrysanthemums came in on the back of the dodgem lorry again, three crates wedged between the generator and a sack of sawdust, and Mr Okonedo swore the whole way from Ludlow that the frost would hold off. It did, just. We set them out along the front of the helter-skelter stall where the lamps catch them, and by Tuesday the bronze ones had opened like little ruffled wheels, pale at the tips.
Nobody buys chrysanthemums at a fair. They come for the hook-a-duck and the candyfloss. But old Mrs Pryce from the caravan at the end walked the whole row on Wednesday, touched one stem with two fingers, and said her mother grew them along a wall in Pembroke and never once cut them for a vase, only for the graves. I didn't know what to say, so I wrapped one in newspaper and gave it to her free.
Thursday the wind came round and took the canvas off the big top. We spent till two in the morning lashing down poles, and when I finally sat on the step of the wagon there was one stem left standing in its bucket, with a single dark leaf turned upward as if it was listening. I think it is the most stubborn thing I have seen all season.
We pull out Saturday for Shrewsbury. I'm keeping that bucket. Come up and see it before the frost, and bring the good scissors.
Love, Bea
