Watercolour arrow and star tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

A small line drawing of an arrow and bow sits on the upper back, with a cluster of dots nearby that resembles a star pattern. Thin dark linework outlines the shapes, and soft pink and blue watercolour washes fill parts of the design. The plain white background and light blue shirt collar keep the focus on the tattoo.

Sit down before the sun gets into your collar, and I'll tell you why the arrow points west. My grandmother told it to me on this same stretch of road, back when the tar was soft enough to take a bootprint and the lorries hadn't yet learned to slow for the dead camel.

There was a bowman called Teodor Ansa who lived out past the salt flats with a wife who sang better than the wind. One evening she walked over the dunes to fetch the goats and did not come back. He searched for three nights. On the fourth he drew his longest bow, and he shot an arrow straight up at the sky, shouting, 'Show me where she went.'

The arrow did not come down. It climbed until the dark swallowed its shaft, and where its head pushed through the night, seven lights came loose in a ring, like grains of rice dropped from a hand. The feathers caught the last of the sunset, pink first and then a bruised blue, and that is why the old men still see colour in it when the rest of us see only light.

The boy asked whether she was ever found. The old man lifted his cup of mint tea and nodded at the road running west, straight as a shaft. 'Every night she is still walking that line,' he said, 'and every night he is still following it.' Then the lorry came grinding up the road, and the boy climbed in beside the driver, and the arrow stayed exactly where it was.
