Three daisies across a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Three large daisy-style flowers are drawn in bold black outline, with overlapping petals that taper toward their centres. The petals and centres are lightly shaded in grey, which gives the flowers depth against the skin. The flowers are arranged in a diagonal cluster that wraps over the top of the shoulder.

The seed packets are wedged behind the ticket machine on platform two, the paper gone soft and furred with damp, DAISY written on the front in pencil that has nearly rubbed away. You take them to the bench while the last commuter train grumbles off towards Hollin Cross, and you read the back twice before you understand that nobody is coming to collect them.

Mr Abney, who has kept the level crossing gates for thirty-one years and trusts nothing that cannot be oiled, says the planter by the waiting room has been bare since the war. You sow them anyway, on your knees in the cinders, pressing each seed into soil the colour of strong tea. Frost comes and goes. For a fortnight there is nothing but green and a wet smell, and then one grey morning the first flower opens flat to the sky like a small white plate set out for guests.

After that you learn their habits. They open when the milk train rattles through and close when the lamps are lit, folding their white petals in around their yellow middles as neatly as a letter. You begin to set your own hours by them. Abney notices and says nothing, which is his way of approving.

In late spring a girl with a suitcase too large for her arms stops at the planter and asks whether the flowers are allowed to be picked. You tell her they are not, then go into the waiting room and come back with a pair of scissors. She takes three. On the platform the afternoon train pulls in, and the daisies you have left behind open again, as if nothing had been taken at all.
