Three daisies on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows three daisy flowers of differing sizes arranged in a loose diagonal across the wrist. The petals are drawn with delicate single outlines and light shading, in dark ink that reads as black or grey. A gold bangle sits above the design, and the hand shows pale pink nails against a blurred tiled background.

Mr Pryce never mowed the daisies on his bowling green, and the council man who came to complain got a cup of tea and a lecture on clover instead. I was twelve the summer I was sent over with the strimmer, a punishment for breaking his greenhouse with a cricket ball, and I spent my first morning on my knees pulling grass from the edges of the lawn with a kitchen fork.

He didn't talk much. He drew, though. On the backs of seed packets he sketched flowers in biro, each petal a single unbroken line, and he told me the trick was to lift the pen before you were sure of it. "Daisies are the only things that hold still for you," he said, "because they're too small to be frightened of you." I didn't understand him then.
The last week of August the grass went brown and the bees went quiet, and he stopped getting up from his deckchair. I found the packets in a biscuit tin under the potting bench, forty-odd drawings in all, and the one on top had three daisies overlapping, one large and two small, the smallest tucked beneath the others as if it were hiding.
I kept the tin and didn't open it again for years. Now every spring I walk past his green, where the lawn grows long and white with flowers, and I leave it be. Nobody has had the heart to cut them, so the whole village mows around them now.
