Small crescent moon with rays on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon outlined in thin black linework, with a row of triangular points along its outer edge that suggest sunlight or rays. The tattoo is shown in dark ink with no shading beyond the line, sitting on pale skin near the wrist. A fine gold chain bracelet and a pinching finger are in frame beside it, against a soft, blurred background.

The almanac on the chandlery counter says the moon will be a thin paring tonight, and you stand at the window with the brass key ring still warm from your hand, watching the harbour lamps blink on one by one along Cutter Quay. Your uncle Alfie has been gone three days on the Morning Star, out past the Skerrin bank, and the tide clerk has asked twice for the signed sheets. You have not found them. What you have found is his brass dividers in the drawer under the spare rope, their points worn bright from years of pricking out the tides.

The sheets are tucked at the back of the almanac, where he drew a small crescent in the margin of every month. The horns curl up like a boat's bow, and along the outer edge he added a fringe of short strokes, sharp as teeth, for the sun that lights it. He used to say the moon was only a lamp someone else had lit, and the rays were how you knew which way the day was coming. You run your thumbnail along the fringe and the paper is soft as cloth from handling.

At low water you walk down the slipway with the dividers in one pocket and a stick of chalk in the other. The fog has come in thick, and the bell buoy is only a voice somewhere beyond the wall. You kneel on the cold stone and draw the crescent large enough to step inside, the rays turned seaward, the way he taught you when you were small enough to hold his wrist still.

When the lamp on the Morning Star finally swings across the water, slow and then quick, you stand up, rub the chalk from your fingers, and count the flashes the way he always did, three short and one long, until the whole harbour is awake again.
