Three daisies on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three daisies of decreasing size sit in a diagonal cluster on the inner wrist, drawn in fine, even outline with dark ink and a small filled centre on each flower. The petals are open single strokes with no shading, leaving the pale skin visible inside them. The soft-focus tiled floor and pink nails frame the wrist, with the tattoo in the lower left of the shot.

Nan kept the flowers pressed between the pages of the church bulletin because the paper was thin enough to keep their shape. By the Thursday of the flitting the house was boxes and echo, and the only thing left on the windowsill was a jam jar with three daisies standing in an inch of water, the biggest one picked from beside the back wall where the rhubarb had gone to seed.

"Those'll not last the drive," said Frank, shifting a wardrobe up the lorry ramp with his shoulder.

"They'll last till Shrewsbury," Nan said. She counted the petals on the largest with a fingernail, the way she had counted them at the bus stop when the 42 was late. Thirty-one. Her mother had always said daisies were honest, because they could not lie about how many times they had been asked.

The other two she had taken from the step, one from each side of the gate, and they were only a little over half the size of the first. She laid all three on the kitchen table in a slant, big to small, and drew their outlines onto the back of an electricity envelope with a biro that kept skipping. The petals came out uneven, and she liked them better for it.

In the new flat above the chemist's, with no garden and a view of the bins, she pressed the flowers into the bulletin again. Weeks later she opened it looking for the hymn numbers and found them, flat and papery, their centres still dark. She shut the pages, went to put the kettle on, and for the first time since the move she did not count anything at all.
