Three elephants and birds on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in profile wears a blue lace bandeau while showing a tattoo on her side. Three elephants of decreasing size walk left to right, with a row of small birds flying above them and a flower near the trailing elephant's trunk. The elephants are shaded in black and grey with fine detail in the skin folds and the birds are rendered in simple silhouette.

The elephants came down to the lagoon the week the rain forgot us, walking single file along the shingle as if someone had measured the gaps between them with a rope. Mother Ansa went first, her ears flapping like sails that had given up on the wind. Behind her came the middle one, then the smallest, who kept stopping to look back at the swifts scattering over the dunes.

My father ran the ferry then, and he said elephants could smell a storm three days out and would walk into the sea rather than be caught on the wrong bank. I did not believe him until I watched the birds rise from the palms in a loose black thread, and the old cow turned her head towards the mainland. The youngest had a marigold caught in the curl of her trunk, pulled from the bank where the fishermen left their offerings. Nobody had told her to carry it.
When the water reached their knees, the smallest stopped. She would not go on. I stood on the stern with the mooring rope in my hands and felt the whole island leaning on that one small decision. Then Ansa lowered her great head and blew once across the surface, and the calf stepped in after her, the marigold lifting from her trunk and drifting out on the ripples.
I still have the rope. The flower never reached the mainland, and I never learned whether it sank or was carried off by the current. But every evening the swifts come back to the palms and wheel above the water in a line, and I know which way they are heading.
