Black mandala tattoo on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black mandala sits on the outer thigh of a person seated on a carpeted floor, with the leg bent and the knee raised. The design has a central flower-like rosette surrounded by layered petals, dotted and fine-lined detail, and an outer ring of spiked shapes. The ink is solid black on tanned skin, and the background shows a bedroom with loose clothing and household items.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the Discovery apples were coming down at Pennick Orchard that August, and my uncle Ruan would not let anyone bruise them. He walked the rows with a wicker basket on his hip and a penknife in his top pocket, stopping under every tree that had dropped something sound. I trailed behind him with a flask of tea gone lukewarm, telling him I had a bus to catch on Thursday and a flat in the city with a window that faced a wall.

He didn't argue. He sat on the tailgate of the van, picked up a windfall still cool from the grass, and cut it clean across the middle instead of from stalk to base. Inside was a star, five points of pale flesh with a dark seed in each one, set in a ring of tiny chambers as neat as stitching. "Everyone cuts them the wrong way," he said. "The star's been in there the whole time, waiting for someone to bother with a knife sideways."

I took the other half from him and turned it in the light. A wasp was already working the sticky edge, unbothered by either of us. I thought about the wall, and the bus, and how long I had let myself believe the best things were always somewhere else. Then I tipped the pips into my palm, counted them, and folded them into an envelope from the van's glovebox. Ruan watched me do it and said nothing at all, which was the most he had ever said to me.
