Three floral sugar skulls with handwritten quote

Black and grey · Flash

Three skulls sit side by side, each filled with detailed floral and ornamental linework, including roses, dahlias and geometric petal patterns in place of eyes and crowns. Handwritten text above and below the skulls reads as a two-part quotation. The image is drawn in fine black ink on a white background, with dense shading and hatching giving the skulls depth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had painted skulls for the village weddings since her husband's boat stopped coming home, and she knew the trick of it was in the eyes. Every skull needed flowers where the eyes had been, so that the dead could look out at the living through something pretty. Roses for the bride's mother, dahlias for the groom's aunt, and for the bride herself a pattern of petals so fine it took a whole night with a nib pen.

The bride, Ines, came to the workshop the week before the wedding with three names written on a scrap of paper. Her sisters had gone to the coast, to the mill towns and over the hills, and none of them had promised to come home for the day. She asked Marta to paint three small skulls, one for each, and to set them in the window where the morning sun would catch them.

Marta worked through the night. She filled the first with climbing roses for the eldest, the second with leaves and a single star for the middle sister, and the third with layered dahlias like a river of petals for the youngest, who had always been the loudest. When the lamp burned low she left them on the sill, facing the road.

On the wedding morning the sisters came up the road one at a time, late and muddy, each stopping at the window to find her own face painted in flowers. Ines laughed and said nothing needed fixing. Marta swept the pigment dust from the sill and found the nib pen still lying there, its ink not yet dry.
