Three framed portraits on lower back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows three oval portraits set within a black scrollwork frame across the lower back, just above the waistband. The central portrait of a girl with dark hair and a red flower is painted in colour, with soft shading on her face, while the two smaller side portraits are rendered in black and grey. The fine ornamental linework of the frame and the symmetrical layout give the piece a balanced, central composition against plain skin and a light top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ilse had restored frames for the Mercy Hall collection for eleven years, and she knew the sound a gilded moulding made just before it split. This one, a scrollwork cradle the colour of old iron, had come up from the lower vaults in a crate stamped with a tide line. Inside its three ovals were portraits no bigger than a thumb joint, and the middle one stopped her hands.

The girl in the centre wore a red flower pinned in her dark hair, and her eyes sat slightly past the viewer, as if someone had just called her name from another room. The two smaller ovals were drawn in grey wash, one showing a woman with her hair scraped back, the other a face turned half away. Ilse found a paper tag tucked behind the backing board, written in brittle copperplate: Keep them together. They do not agree when apart.
She spent three nights on the hinge pins. On the third, the rain on the dome stopped all at once, and in the silence she heard the old lift grinding up from the dock with no one aboard. She did not look up. She had learned in this job that a frame is for holding, not for watching.
When she finally fitted the backing board, the flower in the central portrait seemed brighter, as though the paint had been fed. Ilse wrote the catalogue entry in the morning: three panels, one frame, no provenance beyond the tag. She signed it, then added a line she could never afterwards explain. The middle one is looking at the door.
