Three hummingbirds with rainbow wing tips
Mixed · Photo
Three hummingbirds in flight are shown as solid black silhouettes, each at a different angle and size. The wings of each bird fade into soft colour, with orange, pink, purple and green tones blending out from the black outline. The birds are spaced diagonally across the frame against a plain, lightly lit skin background.

The marquee ropes were already slack when Mrs Ferrier asked me to paint three birds on the tent flap. I told her I painted lettering, not birds. She said her late husband had once seen hummingbirds in a Lisbon garden and never stopped talking about them, and that she would pay double if they looked as though they were about to leave.

I worked in black gouache first, the silhouettes copied from a pencil sketch, the wings left bare. Then the bride's brother, Tobias, came out with a jam jar of leftover paint from the bunting: orange from the lanterns, pink from the napkins, violet from the cake ribbon, and a green he had nicked from the shed door. "Use that," he said. I dragged each colour out from the black edge with a wet brush, feathering it the way you'd blur a sunset into the sea.
The ceremony started while the paint was still tacky. I stood at the back with the damp flap lifting in the wind and watched the vicar read the names I had lettered on the order cards. The birds hung flat and still, and nobody looked at them, which I had expected.
Then a gust caught the canvas and it swung out loose, and for a moment three black shapes hovered over the lawn with rainbow tails streaming behind them, caught halfway between the tent and the hedge. Mrs Ferrier gripped my sleeve. "There," she said. "Now they're going somewhere."
