Three jellyfish on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three jellyfish drift diagonally down the forearm, with bells shaded in soft grey and black and tentacles drawn as long, thin lines. The tentacles are rendered in faint red-brown ink that contrasts with the darker shading of the bells. The jellyfish are spaced across the arm, and the dark background behind the forearm makes the pale skin and delicate linework stand out.

The tide had gone out so far that the jellyfish were stranded in the rock pools below the breakwater, and Mab Tregear was the only one in Skelmoor who would wade out to them before the gulls did. Her father wanted them for the chandlery window, three of them pinned in a glass case with a card that read Sea Ghosts, Ask Within. He had promised the visitors that they would keep until August. Mab knew better, but she carried the bucket down the slipway anyway, the seawater slopping over the rim and cold through her boots.

The bells pulsed slowly in the bucket, grey and black as wet slate, and the threads trailed behind them in a rusty red that caught the light from the harbour lamps. She counted the threads the way her grandmother had taught her to count knots in a net, one, two, three, until the number meant nothing and she was only watching them move. The largest bell tipped toward the lip of the bucket and hung there, and she saw that it had no interest in staying anywhere she had put it.
At the bottom of the steps the swell was coming in green and easy. Mab knelt on the weed and tipped the bucket slowly, the way you would pour milk for a cat. The three bells slid out together and turned once in the water as if deciding which way was down. Then they opened and drifted, their long red threads unspooling behind them like thread pulled through a needle, and she watched until the dark water took them and the last thread gleamed and was gone.
Up in the chandlery the glass case stood empty on the shelf, and her father would say she had wasted a morning. Mab let him say it. The tide was already turning, and somewhere past the breakwater three small lights were rising.
