Umbrella with eyes and raindrops on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of an open umbrella with a curved handle, its scalloped edge decorated with five eyes set in orange and teal bands. Ten dark teardrop-shaped raindrops fall beneath it, shaded with black and grey. The umbrella canopy uses grey shading over bold outlines, with a small red wash above the tip, and the design is centred on the forearm.

The rain had not stopped over Haddow Fair for nine days, and the ringmaster, Tobias Crane, had stopped paying the lamp-lighter. What he had left was a striped tent with three holes in its roof and one umbrella, black silk and older than the company itself. The old showmen said the umbrella opened over whoever held it and kept the weather off, and the five painted eyes along its edge had been stitched on by the first owner so it could watch the sky for them.

Mabel Stroud carried it. She was twelve and the only one who had not run off with the acrobats. Each morning she walked the muddy field with the umbrella up, and each morning the drops fell around her in a ring, dark as pennies, and never once on her.
Then the bank men came on a Thursday with their hats dry and their boots clean. They wanted the tent, the wagons and the umbrella too, because a shop in Leeds would pay good money for antique silk. Mabel stood in the mud and said the eyes did not like being looked at by strangers. Tobias laughed and reached for the handle. The first drop struck his wrist, then another. By the time he had his hand clear, the sky had split open and the rain came down on the bank men alone, sheeting off the canvas and soaking their good coats through to the skin.
They drove off at dusk. Mabel closed the umbrella and hung it on the tent pole. In the morning there was sun on the field, and the eyes along its edge were blinking slowly, as if they had only just woken.
