Three knives above a floral cluster
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows three knives stacked vertically in a row, each with a different handle design, above a symmetrical cluster of three open flowers with leaves and sprigs on either side. The linework is bold and even, with hatching and stippling used for shading on the blades and petals. The image is black ink on a white background, with the flowers forming a wide base beneath the knives.

The cutler's widow at Marlow Cross kept three knives in the drawer beneath the bread board, and no child was let touch them until the peonies came out along the chapel wall. Every June she laid them on the scrubbed table in a row, grip to point, the way the drawings in her husband's ledger showed them.

The first had its handle bound in waxed thread, wound tight and dark with years of hands. The second had a star scratched into its bolster and a brass stud that clicked when you pressed it, which the children found more wonderful than anything. The third was plain black, smooth as a river stone. When her three boys were grown, she told them each to choose one and to remember that a knife does only what it is asked, and no more.
Edwin took the bound one down to the quarry, where it cut rope and carried him home safe every evening. Frank took the starred one to the fairs, and it opened ribbon bales and sacks of seed and nothing else. Michael would not choose at all. He said he would rather trust his own two hands, and he left the black knife lying in the drawer.
Forty summers later, the widow's grandson found it there, bright as the day it was made, with the peonies climbing the chapel wall as thick as ever. He carried it out to the yard and cut the stems for the table, one clean stroke each, and set the white flowers in a jug where the widow used to stand.
