Black line drawing of a symmetrical floral design with four flower heads, leaves and curling vines on a white background, in a botanical style suitable for a flash sheet.

Line drawn floral design with swirling vines

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows four stylised flower heads arranged in a loose diamond, with a larger blossom at the top and bottom and smaller rosettes at the left and right. Thin, even black outlines form petals, leaves, dotted detailing and spiralling vines that fill the空 space around the central motif. The image is monochrome with no shading, and the composition is symmetrical on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The foreman wanted a repeat for a pillow-slip: four blooms and a loose diamond, nothing that would trouble a bride's mother. Ada had the board by the north window, where the light was cleanest for a steel nib, and she had been at the ink since the lamplighters went round. Mr Pell stood at her shoulder with his watch chain swinging like a plumb line. "Even weight, Ada. Every line the same as the last."

She kept them even. The top bloom came first, scalloped petals with dots set in their hollows like rivets, then the two rosettes, one on the left wing and one on the right, each turned a fraction so they never quite matched. The vines came after, curling out from the stems and coiling tight where a letter might have gone. Pell tapped the sheet and called the spirals fussy. She said nothing and inked one more leaf at the end of a tendril.

By the time the bell rang for dinner the diamond was closed and the lowest bloom sat heavy at the base, its petals open like a hand. Ada noticed that the vines had crept past the edge of the card and were running on across the bare paper beyond the cutting line. Nobody would ever see that part on a pillow. She let them run.

Pell came back with the lamp and found her still bent over the board. He studied it a long while. "It's a repeat, Ada."

"It is," she said, and blotted the last curl dry, where the vine ran off into the white.
