Devanagari script tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black Devanagari script tattoo on the inner forearm, running diagonally from the wrist upwards. The lettering has smooth, solid linework with a single flowing stroke across the top and a small curved mark beneath, and the ink appears dark grey to black. The frame is cropped tightly around the arm, with a pale bath and a bent hand at the top, and soft natural light on the skin.

The fan belt snapped at noon, forty kilometres short of the well at Kolu, and the bus sat shuddering in the white glare while Mohan swore at it in three languages. Passengers climbed down to crouch in the thin shade of the tyres. I stayed by the driver's door counting water bottles, because a conductor counts things when he has nothing else to do.

The girl in the third row had a spare belt wrapped in yesterday's newspaper from Jodhpur. She had been carrying it since Barmer for a cousin's cart, she said, and she would not let it go for less than the price of her ride. Mohan laughed until he saw she was serious. Then he fitted it himself, his knuckles bleeding on the hot metal, while she sat on the step with her school book open on her knees and did not look up once.
When we were moving again she tore a corner from my ticket roll and wrote on it with a stub of pencil in her round, looping hand. It was a single word: अनमोल. I asked her what it meant. Anmol, she said, priceless, the word her grandmother used for anyone who came back from the city with their luck still intact. I tried to pay her the fare anyway. She shook her head and pressed the scrap into my palm as if it were the change.
I still have it, soft as cloth from handling, tucked behind the sun visor of the bus I drive now. Whenever the belt starts to squeal at noon, I touch the corner of it, then reach for the water.
