Dahlia tattoo on a shoulder
Traditional · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large dahlia in shades of pink and red sits on the upper back near the shoulder, with green leaves curling out from its lower left and right. The petals are outlined in bold black and shaded with lighter highlights toward their tips, giving a layered, bloom-like look. The subject is shown from behind against a plain pink top and pale wall, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every Thursday the rain came down on Castle Lane market, and every Thursday old Hester Vane set her trestle under the awning nearest the fish shed and laid out her dahlias as if the sky had asked her to. Her blooms were red at the heart and pink at the tips, packed tight as a fist of playing cards, and the green leaves she tucked around them shone with water. Nobody bought flowers in the wet. They bought them in the dry, and she never complained.

A boy came one Thursday with a coin in his damp palm and asked why she kept flowers the weather would only spoil. She told him the dahlia was a stubborn thing that grew best where the ground was cold and the nights were long, and that it opened slowest when it mattered most. He did not believe her. He went home and pushed a tuber into his mother's yard, and when the frost came he carried the pot indoors and sat beside it every evening, counting the petals as they unfolded.
By August the bloom was the size of a cartwheel and the rain had stayed away for a week. He carried it down to the market in both arms, and Hester looked at it for a long time without speaking. Then she bent under her trestle, brought out a pair of old shears wrapped in oilcloth, and held them out to him. He understood then that she had been waiting for someone to ask her how it was done, and that she would have taught him for nothing.
She went back to pricing her roses, and the rain came on again the next morning, as it always did.
