The spider had strung its web between the three masts of the Greyling for a week before anyone thought to cut it down. Old Mari Penhale said it was a sign the sea wanted three of her sons, and she was half right, though the sea was never fussy about numbers. Her boys came down to the quay that morning with their hair still wet, each one arguing that the other two were fools.

Ansel, the eldest, went up the mast first to clear the threads, and he hung head down from the crosstree by his own line, laughing at the gulls until Corin hauled him back to the deck. Corin sat on a coil of rope and played his fiddle badly, the way he always did when he was pleased with himself. Tobias stood at the rail and watched the weathervane on the chapel swing north. He said nothing about the dream he had had the night before, in which the spider told him which of them would not come home, because a dream told plainly is only a dream until somebody says it aloud.

They sailed on the turn of the tide. Tobias stayed ashore with the girl he had promised to marry, and Mari stood beside them at the harbour wall. When the first boat came in grey at dawn, it had two men aboard and a fiddle lying across the thwart. Mari counted them twice, then put her arms around the girl and did not let go until the tide was fully out.
