Nobody on the Hollin Cut would tow past the lock at Stannet after dark, not since the winter the ice split and the black dragon came up out of the mud with a knot round its neck. Maud Pellow said she had tied it there herself, with three lengths of tarred hawser and a prayer her mother taught her, and that the knot had three loops because three is the number of ways a thing can hold on.

Her barge, the Wren, carried coal up to the mills and came back down with salt. Whenever the water ran high, the dragon lifted its wings above the lock gates and the river went quiet to listen. Her nephew Tobias, who had never believed a word of it, took a lantern down to the lock one night to prove the loops were only rope.

He came back before dawn with the lantern gone out and his palms raw from the gate chains. The knot had loosened, he said, though not broken. One loop had slipped, and the dragon had turned its head towards the Wren's cabin, and he could not tell whether it was asking for something or thanking him.

Maud did not scold him. She went down the cabin steps, lifted the coiled hawser from its hook, and tied the knot again in the dark by feel, the way you would mend a torn sleeve for someone you loved. By morning the water had dropped a hand's width and the mill wheels were turning again.
