Nell had the treadle going before the rain stopped, and the wheel spat its first sparks across the yard wall as though someone had struck a match in the wrong place. Her father used to say a grinder's sparks were the only honest sunrise in Sheffield, because they came off steel and went out again without pretending to be anything else.

The knife came over the back gate wrapped in a feed sack. Mrs Adlington had brought her late husband's carving knife, the one he had sharpened every Sunday for thirty years, and she wanted it edged so it could cut the joint one more time. Nell turned the blade slowly against the stone, watching the light fan out from the steel in bright tongues, eight of them pulling away from the edge like the rays a child draws on a sun. The old stone had worn a shallow dip where a thousand Sundays had pressed it, and the blade had thinned to a smile at its heel.
Nell laid a sheet of newspaper across the bench and drew the knife through it. The paper parted cleanly, without a tear or a snag. Mrs Adlington watched Nell's hands rather than the knife, and she didn't mention the price. She only asked whether he would have approved of the edge. Nell said he would have grumbled, then borrowed it for the week.
When the wheel finally slowed, the yard had gone dark and the sparks were gone, but the stone still gave off that warm iron smell. Nell wrapped the knife back in its sack and left the lamp burning on the sill, the way her father always had, so anyone passing the gate could see there was still work being done inside.
