Three treble clefs over interlocking circles
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows three treble clefs, each mounted on a pointed shaft, radiating upwards and outwards from a central knot of three overlapping circles. The linework is solid black with bold filled clef shapes and thin, uniform lines for the circles and shafts. The composition is symmetrical on a plain white background, with the clefs at the top and the shafts extending to the lower corners.

The wind off the Solway has been pulling at the roofless hall since the rain stopped, and you are the only one still counting the stones. Your brother wants to leave before the tide turns across the flats. He has his pack on and his jaw set, and he will not look at the arch where the minstrels' gallery once hung.

Three arrows lie on the flagstones, a gift from the old steward, who swore they were shot from the keep the night the bells were taken. Each shaft carries a treble clef in place of fletching, black iron curled tight as fern, and where the shafts cross, three rings lock together like a snared knot. You turn one over. The clef is warm, as if someone has only just let go of it.
Your brother says the rings are nothing but a hunter's mark. You tell him the steward claimed the arrows sang when loosed, and that the bells answered them from under the water. He laughs, then stops, because somewhere below the courtyard a low note hums through the stone, rising a third and falling back.
You fit the first arrow to the bow he left leaning on the wall and draw towards the empty gallery. You release. The clef spins up into the dark, the whole ruin hums, and the rings glow faintly on the wet stone. Then the tide comes in with its usual indifference, and you are standing in the shallows with two arrows, a warm hand, and no music at all.
