Matching blue rose tattoos on forearm and calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two people's limbs are shown, with matching floral tattoos. The central piece is a rose with leaves and small buds on the lower leg, and a larger rose design with leaves and stems sits on the forearm of the arm reaching in from the top right. The linework is bold and outlined, with solid dark blue ink and some fine detail in the leaves, set against pale skin and a dark textured ground.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ilse found the pattern in the bottom of her aunt's tin, the lid dented where someone had once used it as a hammer. Inside, pencilled onto the cardboard lining, were three roses, each with buds folded tight like paper cones and leaves that came off the stem in pairs. Aunt Brenda would not say who had drawn them. "Copy what's there and don't improve it," she said, and went back to salting the herring.

So Ilse copied them through the winter, tracing with a borrowed lightbox onto tissue paper, then pricking the outlines through with a darning needle. She worked indigo thread into cotton napkins for the market stall at Saltcombe, and the roses kept coming out wrong. Her leaves ran longer than the originals, and her buds sat a finger's width too far from the petals. Each time she unpicked a rose, the thread left faint blue ghosts in the weave, and each time she stitched it again, a little more of her own hand crept in.

In March a woman from the fishing co-op bought six napkins and asked about the lopsided one at the corner, where a leaf ran off the edge of the linen. Ilse said it was a mistake. The woman folded it carefully and said the mistakes were the only part worth keeping, and that her own grandmother had been the same.

That night Ilse lifted the tin lid to the lamp. Under the three old roses someone had pencilled a fourth, faint and new, with one leaf reaching past the frame.
