Three peonies with leaves, pencil design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows three peony flowers at different sizes, stacked diagonally, with a smaller wild rose style bloom to the upper left and several long leaves and small buds around them. The linework is fine and confident, with pencil or ink hatching and stippled dots that suggest shadow on the petals and leaves. The image is entirely monochrome on a pale background, arranged as a tall composition that would suit a forearm or similar area.

Hanne found the rose first, a pale bloom wedged between two shelves of grey rock just under the saddle, its petals already thinning in the wind. She crouched beside it with the mule's lead looped twice around her wrist and waited for the cold to ease from her knuckles. Behind her, wrapped in wet sacking and tied to the pack frame, was the root her grandmother had dug out of a valley meadow forty years before, a knot of brown fingers Hanne had never once let go of.

The path above the saddle was white in the hollows and bare where the wind had scoured it. Brot stopped every twenty paces to blow through his nose, and each time Hanne stopped with him, watching the rose leaves lift and settle like the hands of someone signalling across a valley. Her grandmother had said peonies would not flower for a year after moving, and that a root which came over a pass had to be asked twice before it would agree to stay. Hanne had not believed her. She believed the rose.
At the monastery of Sankt Ilsa, where the brothers kept a walled garden the wind could not reach, a lay sister took the sacking from her hands and split the root with a knife. There were three crowns. Hanne planted them in a line down the south slope, each a hand's width from the next, and the lay sister scolded her for spacing them like soldiers.
The next June the uppermost plant opened first, a fat crimson head that faced the pass as if it had been waiting all winter to see who was coming. The two below kept their buds tight for another week, leaning towards the valley road, and Hanne sat on the wall with her boots in the grass and let them take their time.
