Three star motifs with dotted line on shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Three black star motifs of decreasing size are linked by a fine dotted line that runs diagonally from the collarbone towards the top of the shoulder. The linework is thin and crisp, with solid black fill in the star points and small dots along the connecting line. The tattoo sits against pale skin, with a grey tank top and a dark background behind the subject.

Mind the lantern, and sit down, sit down. Not on that crate, that's Bartholomew's, and he bites. You've come for the stars, have you? Everybody comes for the stars after the second bottle, so I'll tell it once, straight, and you can argue with the sky yourself.

There was a rope-walker's girl called Nell Harrow who drew on the back of a ticket roll in the last week of the Cattermole season. Three stars, one above the other like lamps on a dark road, and between them a line of dots. Her father laughed and said stars don't join up, love, they just sit where they sit. She said they do if you walk between them. He said the Cattermole wagons weren't going anywhere in the winter, and she said then she would go on her own.
She went at the first frost with a tin of matches and a pencil and no coat worth the name. At each star she stopped in a field and left a ticket stub under a stone, the way the old showmen used to mark a pitch. At the third star, a crossroads above Thrapston, the wind had taken half of them, and her father found the last one pinned to a gatepost with a bent nail. He had walked all three nights to get there, with the dots in his head and the sky clear as cut glass above him.
So when you go out to your car tonight, look up and count the dots. You'll find one more than you expected, and that's where the road keeps going, if you're daft enough to follow it.
