Three swallows in flight

Traditional · Colour · Flash

Three swallows are drawn in flight at different angles on a plain cream background. Each bird has bold black outlines, blue wings and forked tails, with orange wing edging, a red throat and a white, curled eye area. The flat colour fills and clean linework are typical of traditional tattoo flash.

The swallows came in over the marquee just as the vicar asked for the ring, three of them, low across the lawn where the bunting snapped in the wind off the estuary. Nobody else looked up. You did, because Uncle Terry once told you that a swallow seen at sea meant the captain was heading home, and you have never quite lost the habit of checking the sky at important moments.

The ring was in your waistcoat pocket, the one with the torn lining that Dolores kept promising to mend. When you reached for it, your fingers found only a loose button and a folded bus ticket. Your heart did something unhelpful. You bent, crept under the trestle table and found the ring rolling in a slow circle on the grass, as though it had somewhere in mind to go.

It led you past the hay bales and the tin bath of ice, out towards the sea wall, where the three birds were skimming the grey water and turning as if they had been told a secret. Each time you got close, they lifted, dipped and waited. The ring kept rolling. By the time you reached the wall, the old boat her father had sold, the Constance Rose, was tied up below with her paint gone the colour of porridge, and the ring had stopped against the toe of your shoe.

You came back up the slope with the ring held high, and the whole marquee cheered as though you had caught a bouquet. The swallows settled on the top pole, three neat rows of blue, watching. Dolores laughed and said her dad always claimed swallows nested only where they meant to stay. Then you slid the ring onto her finger and felt the birds lift off at once, away over the water, heading out to sea.
