The sheet shows three swallows in flight, each with dark outlined wings and tails shaded in blue and black. Their chests are red with pale cream faces, and one bird carries a cream scroll banner beneath it. The linework is bold and solid, with flat colour fills and a single orange flower and green leaves beside one of the birds, set on a plain off-white background.

Don't you touch that lamp, son. It's the last one still burning on the quay, and old Ada Pell never let it go out while a boat was on the water. Three nights running the mist came up off the Avon so thick you couldn't see your own bowsprit, and three nights she sat on the bollard with her shawl pulled tight, cursing the fog as if it owed her money.

On the third night the birds came. Three swallows, dropping low over the mud at the slipway, out of nothing at all. Ada swore they were the same birds her husband Joe had carried north on his chest after the Baltic run, blue as a gas flame, with a red breast like a coal. One of them had a scroll banner hanging beneath it, cream-coloured and curled at the tail. 'Write it down, Ada,' Joe used to say, 'so the birds know where we're bound.'

The first swallow flew straight at the lamp and wheeled away. The second went wide past the flower stall, where the jam jars still stood in a row. The third let go of its banner, which fell into the mud right at her boots. Ada crouched, wiped it clean with her thumb, and read a single line in Joe's careful hand: Home by the lamp.

A horn sounded out past the bar, then another. The Mary Lowe's bow came nosing through the grey, and there he was at the rail, same grin, rope already in his fist. 'Didn't think you'd keep it lit,' he called. 'Never once let it go out,' Ada said, and held the lamp higher so he could see.
