Every evening I fanned my tail under the chandeliers and the room went quiet, and every evening the Duke counted the eyes on my feathers as though they were coins. Forty-one, he told his wife once, and she laughed and said I was a bird, not a bank.

I carried a single eye from my tail in my beak, the emerald one nearest the spine, and dropped it through the grille into Tobias's cupped hands. He held it up to the last lamp, and the whole stable lit green, and he laughed until he cried, and I have never been so sure I was the most magnificent creature in the kingdom.
