Three swallows on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three solid black swallow silhouettes in flight are arranged across the forearm, each in a different pose. Each bird has a soft, blended halo of colour: green on the left, deep blue in the centre and pink on the right. The background shows a patterned fabric in black, white and coral.

The mule stops at the cairn above Hollin Gap and refuses to take another step, so you lean against its shoulder and count the bells on the pack saddle the way your grandmother taught you, one for each load of salt that crossed before the road was cut. The wind comes off the scree smelling of wet stone. Below you the valley is still in shadow, but the ridge has already caught the first light, and that is when the swallows come through.

They are early this year, three of them, low and fast, dropping into the gap as though someone had thrown them. The first is the colour of new bracken, a green that bleeds back along its wings wherever the sun slides across. The second is the dark blue of the tarn at noon, and the third carries a pink smear like the inside of a shell. You have watched swallows cross a hundred times, but never three together, flying in such a tight triangle that they seem to be passing one invisible thread between them.
Your father used to say a swallow that stops at the pass has already decided to stay. So you wait for them to settle on the wall, and they do not. They wheel once above the mule, then go straight over the lip and down toward the lake, and the pink one turns its head back at you before it drops out of sight. You tap the bell, the mule grunts and follows, and the loads shift on its back.
By the time you reach the hut the wind has dropped and Ada has the stove lit. She asks whether you saw the birds. You say yes, three, and she nods as if you have passed a test, then pours the tea. Outside the mule is already asleep in the straw, and from the eaves of the byre comes the calling of the swallows, a sound like someone laughing in another room.
