Three tribal butterfly and heart designs

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows three separate symmetrical designs stacked vertically, each combining butterfly wings with a central heart motif. The top and bottom designs use curling swirls and pointed tips, while the middle one has sharper, blade-like wing shapes. All three are drawn in solid black linework and fills on a plain white background.

The bellows had been wheezing since the thaw, and my mother said the forge would die before the cold did. So I carried the iron myself down the seven stairs to Orsel Mere, where the ferryman's daughter kept a kiln that never went out. She took one look at the black strips I had hammered thin as lace and laughed at me. "You want wings," she said, "but you've made them out of blades." I told her I had been asked for wings that could cut a path through the reeds, and she shrugged and set them in the coals.

The work took three nights. She curled the tips into scrolls, one turn for every debt my father had owed the mill, and when she had finished the scrolls she pressed a heart into the middle, pinched and pointed at the bottom like a drop about to fall. Then she made me hold the two halves against each other on the workbench, edge to edge, until the seam of them went dark and warm. "Now they can't come apart," she said, "not even if the wind wants them to."

I took the thing back up the stairs under my coat. At the top the river had risen over the lower steps, and the reeds stood with their heads bent, and a single pale moth was turning over the water as if it had lost something on the surface. I held the iron out over the edge and watched the moth come to it, weighing wings against wings, and then it settled on the heart and stayed there until the sun went down behind the mill.
