Three winged cats across an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Three cats with feathered wings are shown in mid-flight, each one following the next in a diagonal line. The linework is fine and the bodies are shaded with soft grey tones to give volume. The design is entirely black and grey and sits on bare skin against a plain, lightly lit background.

Dear Tom,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday and the stalls on Gaunt Street are sagging like wet bunting. Mrs Abernethy still sells her eels under the tarpaulin, though nobody buys them. I came up to the market to find that grey cat of hers with the torn ear, and found instead three of them sitting on the lid of the poultry crate, all pewter-coloured, staring at the sky as if it owed them money.
Mrs Abernethy says they came in the spring, one litter from under the bric-a-brac stall, and she never named them because she never expected them to stay. Last Thursday the smallest went up off the crate in a gust and didn't come down. It simply rose, its wings opening like a pair of damp umbrellas, and the other two followed in a line, each one reaching for the tail of the one before. I stood under the awning with a bag of onions and watched them cross over the clock tower on a slant, like a row of stitches pulled through cloth.
Nobody believed me, so I'm telling you, since you always believed the things I told you when we were small. The cats came back the next morning, wet and furious, and settled on the crate as though nothing had happened. Mrs Abernethy says they only go up to look at the weather. I think they've decided it isn't worth the trouble.
Come home at Easter. Bring the good boots, and I'll show you the three of them, if the rain holds off long enough for them to fly.
Love, Ruth
