Longhorn bull skull with feathers on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bull skull with long curved horns sits centrally, with a feather hanging from the base of each horn. The skull is rendered with soft grey shading and dark outlines, and the feathers have fine bold strokes. The design is shown in close view on pale skin, with the horns spanning most of the width of the frame.

The cattle came off the trail at Ogallala the way water comes off a roof, all at once and then not at all. By the third week of August the pens were so thick with dust that I could taste it through the ticket grille. Mr Halloran had the telegraph and I had the timetable, and between us we were meant to move four thousand head east before the rain turned the yard to glue.

Tobiah Crane came in on the last afternoon carrying a bull's skull wrapped in a blanket. It had been bleached on the prairie for two summers, and its horns still stretched wider than a wagon yoke. Through the hollows at the base of each horn he had knotted a feather, a hawk's on the left and a grouse's on the right, the quills gone soft and grey with weather. He wanted it shipped to a sister in Cheyenne and would not say why. I weighed it, wrote the label in my best hand, and set it on the platform bench beside the water can.

The freight clerk read the label wrong, or I wrote it wrong, and by the time anyone noticed, the 4:10 had taken the crate east with the mail. I watched from the platform as the smoke flattened over the level land. Tobiah never came back for it and never asked after it. When the wind comes off the plain now, I still hear the feathers tapping against the depot door, the same dry sound a man makes knocking to be let in.
