Mrs Ida Pargeter had kept the haberdashery on Coldharbour Lane for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had ever asked for the last yard of a cloth before she'd finished counting the bolts. So when Nell Kettering came in on a wet Thursday, tapping a cherry-print sample against the counter like a magistrate's gavel, Ida knew the trouble had come to stay.

"Forty-two inches," Nell said. "Not forty-one. The cherries have to sit just so on the hip, or the whole skirt looks like a jam tart dropped down the stairs."
Ida measured twice and cut once, which was the only rule her mother had left her along with the shop and a chipped brass bell. She rolled the cloth in brown paper, tied it with string, and slid a small card across the wood. On it she had drawn a row of dots, a bow, and a dotted line running down a leg. "Not for the cloth," she said. "For the dance. Take the card and the dancing will sort itself out."
Nell laughed, and the bell rang behind her as she went out past the window, where the rain ran in slow silver lines down the glass. Ida folded the spare polka dot offcut into her apron pocket, the way she always did, and went to the top shelf to count the reels. There were forty-one red and one black, and the black one had been waiting for a customer since 1979. Ida decided, for once, that it could keep waiting a little longer.
