Tied shoelace bow on lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a tied shoelace bow with two looping lace ends and a short aglet at each tip. The lace is rendered in soft grey shading with small dotted eyelet marks along its length, and the knot is detailed with light and dark tones. The design is centred on the lower back against plain skin, with a hand and dark clothing at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boots came back to Mrs Ardle's step with their laces cut through, and the boy who had worn them was nowhere in Ketterby by the time the bells went for prayers. Nobody in the lane would say who had cut them. Old Hanne, who kept the oven at the corner, only wiped her floury hands on her apron and said the river had been high that week and the road to the bridge was soft.

Tobiah, the cobbler's boy, had found the laces in the gutter that morning, still knotted at one end. He sat on the bench in the dark workshop with a stub of candle and a bone awl, and he made the ends into a bow the way his grandfather had shown him, two loops crossed and pulled snug, each tip finished with a brass aglet he had filed smooth. His grandfather used to say a tied bow is a promise to come back to the place you left it. Tobiah did not believe him, but he tied it anyway, and he set the boots on the sill facing the road.

He was out on the marsh road before the light came, following the peat smoke and the dog barking at the far end of the fen. By the time he reached the bridge the mist had thinned enough to see the water, and there was a boy on the far bank with his stockings wet to the knee, hopping from one foot to the other and crying that his laces had snapped in the reeds.

At sunrise Hanne opened her shutters to the smell of new bread and found two pairs of boots side by side on Mrs Ardle's step, both laced into neat bows, the loops still crisp and the brass tips catching the first light. Nobody mentioned the bridge again.
