Fine line butterfly on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small butterfly is drawn in thin, continuous black linework with looping wings and a slim central body. The design sits on pale skin, with the soft background showing a cartoon bear figure and bedding. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the butterfly is centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told twice already that the thread would snap if she lifted her hand, and twice she had lifted it anyway, so the third time her grandmother simply took the bobbins away and set the pillow on her knees. The cushion was stuffed with straw and pinned with a hundred pins, and the pattern pricked onto card was a moth, though Gran called it a butterfly because the shops in town paid better for butterflies.

"One line," Gran said. "Start at the pin by the wing, go round the body, and don't come back on yourself until the last loop closes."

Nell worked through the afternoon while the Honiton rain ticked against the window and the kettle sulked on the range. Each crossing of the bobbins was a small decision she could not undo, and by teatime the wings had grown from a single curl into a shape that looked, in the lamplight, almost ready to leave the card.

When the final pin went in, the thread ran unbroken from the first loop to the last. Gran held the pillow up to the lamp and turned it slowly, the way a fisherman reads a sky.

"There's your butterfly," she said. "Cut the thread now and it's only lace. Leave it whole and it's a thing that can lift off the cushion if it likes."

Nell did not cut it.
