Tiger face with butterfly wings on a leg

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A tiger face forms the body of a butterfly, with orange fur, black stripes, white muzzle markings and green eyes with dark pupils. Bold black outlines define the features, with soft shading on the cheeks and wing edges and fine swirling lines at the top of the wings. The vivid orange and green dominate against the pale skin, and the design is centred on a close crop of a leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair pulled into Harrowell on the last Thursday of August, and by Saturday the whole green smelled of diesel and frying onions. You sold tickets from a tin booth beside the Dodgem cars, and each evening the painter came round with his paint tins, asking the lads who'd won goldfish whether they fancied a picture for the caravan wall. Nobody took him up on it. He had a face like a shut door and a cough that rattled through the bunting. Only you bought one of his small wooden panels, the Thursday he slid it across your counter in exchange for a shilling's worth of coppers.

It showed a tiger's head, orange as a marmalade jar, with black stripes running back over each cheek, and where the wings should have been there were two great butterfly wings, edged in black, so the cat looked out at you from the middle of a flutter. Its eyes were green as bottle glass, with pupils like pinpricks. You hung it in the booth. Your mother said it looked like a pantomime in a bad dream, and you agreed with her, and kept it anyway.

On the Monday the fair packed up in the rain. When you walked the empty green there was only a scatter of paint tins and a single orange hair caught on the gate. You took the panel home that night and turned it to the lamp. The green eyes had gone darker, and the wings sat a fraction higher off the wood, like something that had tried them out and decided to wait for the next fair.
